The Upper Crust Catering Tasting Evening

This week we were invited to join chef Chris and the team to photograph the Upper Crust tasting evening. What better evening is there than taking photos of food, and then getting to eat it afterwards, and it was DELICIOUS!!

Helen (the owner at Upper Crust) and Chris (the very talented chef) wanted to put on a tasting menu for the evening to show their future wedding clients what they can really do given the chance, and the evening was a massive success.

Here are a few of our photos from the evening…

Review – The Lighthouse Restaurant

Our rating:

5* Food Rating

“Watch this space guys – The Lighthouse Restaurant is awesome!”

We’d visited The Lighthouse in Boylestone a few years ago for a meal as it was right on our doorstep – we had a nice meal, but it was only a 6 out of 10 for us, so when our friends suggested giving it a go again, we weren’t sure what to expect. We had heard great things recently about the new tasting menu The Lighthouseand all I can say is, “what a difference a day (or a few years) makes”. After last night we’ll be returning far too often for food having left there thoroughly surprised and happy at the delicious meal that we’d just been served. 10 / 10 guys!

We’re always slightly dubious of restaurants that call themselves ‘fine dining’ as its a term that seems to have lost all meaning these days and is splashed around without thought or moderation like an ugly brush smear of under flavoured jus on a plate, but thankfully The Lighthouse in Boylestone really lived up to the phrase and they should be proud to call themselves a fine dining restaurant.

We booked table of 4 – We have a couple of friends that we regularly go out to dinner with as we’re all massive foodies, and are happy to have a good old chat about the latest starred restaurant we’ve tried, so naturally we opted for the chefs tasting menu which was filled with the delights of scallops, Ashbourne quail, oxtail, beef, wild garlic, passion fruit, salted caramel but to name a few, and every course was a delight. A particular highlight for me was the brie tarte tatin,  which was narrowly outshone by the star of the meal, the beef fillet with pomme puree and wild garlic. Beautifully presented on the plate, well seasoned and delivered to the table with a smile from the lovely staff there who’s service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening.

We’ve said it over and over again, but Derbyshire, for a county with some great produce, really lacks truly decent places to eat, so to find somewhere that is just 5 miles down the road from us here in Doveridge is a momentous discovery and I feel may become a bit of an issue for us when the cupboards are bare or we just can’t be bothered to cook as we’ll be there all the time if we’re not careful.

Make sure you book early though to avoid missing out – We booked a few weeks in advance and on a Thursday night, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was a Saturday night as the place was full.

Watch this space over the next couple of years a i’m sure The Lighthouse will continue to grow and grow into one of Derbyshire’s leading restaurants and who knows what may be on the horizon as the Michelin inspectors do their rounds!

Thanks again guys!

As a price guide, the tasting menu is £50 per person (£35 on Thursdays) – Our meal cost us £180 for a table of 4, with a couple of pre-dinner drinks, a bottle of wine and some soft drinks which isn’t half bad at £45 per person

Chocolate Photography – Aphrodite Chocolates

Meet Aphrodite Chocolates, run by the lovely Lia!

Lia is having a complete re-brand and new website for her artisan chocolate business and with the new site being so heavily centered on beautiful imagery, she decided that the time was right to have some professional photos done.

Every client is different for us – Some know exactly what they want and have a very specific brief, and others are happy to let us improvise on the day and work to a very loose brief – Lia knew she wanted some amazing photos and had sent us some examples of what her new website is going to look like in advance of the shoot, so we worked together on the day in the studio to create both useful commercial images for use in her online shop, and also some more demanding and artistic images to add an extra touch of class to her website.

Here are a few of our favourites from the shoot…

Food Photography in London – Caneles by Babelle

food_photography_in_Derybshire_and_London_Clients_Babelle__0014

When I get invited down to London for food photoshoots, I know its going to be a great time, and Nicolas and chef Philippe of Babelle certainly didn’t disappoint!

I spent 2 days shooting Canales in the Babelle development kitchens – delicious little french desserts with an assortment of fillings and dips, in preparation for their big business launch later this year. Nicolas knew I was a big foodie too, so he took me out for some dinner in the heart of London at a great little restaurant so we could plan the second day of shooting, chat about life in general and all things music (we both share a love of Pink Floyd!). We got through soooo many shots in 2 days, but worth all the effort!

Anyway, here are a few of my favourite photos from the shoot…
