“Watch this space guys – The Lighthouse Restaurant is awesome!”
We’d visited The Lighthouse in Boylestone a few years ago for a meal as it was right on our doorstep – we had a nice meal, but it was only a 6 out of 10 for us, so when our friends suggested giving it a go again, we weren’t sure what to expect. We had heard great things recently about the new tasting menu and all I can say is, “what a difference a day (or a few years) makes”. After last night we’ll be returning far too often for food having left there thoroughly surprised and happy at the delicious meal that we’d just been served. 10 / 10 guys!
We’re always slightly dubious of restaurants that call themselves ‘fine dining’ as its a term that seems to have lost all meaning these days and is splashed around without thought or moderation like an ugly brush smear of under flavoured jus on a plate, but thankfully The Lighthouse in Boylestone really lived up to the phrase and they should be proud to call themselves a fine dining restaurant.
We booked table of 4 – We have a couple of friends that we regularly go out to dinner with as we’re all massive foodies, and are happy to have a good old chat about the latest starred restaurant we’ve tried, so naturally we opted for the chefs tasting menu which was filled with the delights of scallops, Ashbourne quail, oxtail, beef, wild garlic, passion fruit, salted caramel but to name a few, and every course was a delight. A particular highlight for me was the brie tarte tatin, which was narrowly outshone by the star of the meal, the beef fillet with pomme puree and wild garlic. Beautifully presented on the plate, well seasoned and delivered to the table with a smile from the lovely staff there who’s service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening.
We’ve said it over and over again, but Derbyshire, for a county with some great produce, really lacks truly decent places to eat, so to find somewhere that is just 5 miles down the road from us here in Doveridge is a momentous discovery and I feel may become a bit of an issue for us when the cupboards are bare or we just can’t be bothered to cook as we’ll be there all the time if we’re not careful.
Make sure you book early though to avoid missing out – We booked a few weeks in advance and on a Thursday night, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was a Saturday night as the place was full.
Watch this space over the next couple of years a i’m sure The Lighthouse will continue to grow and grow into one of Derbyshire’s leading restaurants and who knows what may be on the horizon as the Michelin inspectors do their rounds!
Thanks again guys!
As a price guide, the tasting menu is £50 per person (£35 on Thursdays) – Our meal cost us £180 for a table of 4, with a couple of pre-dinner drinks, a bottle of wine and some soft drinks which isn’t half bad at £45 per person
